Find Maps - Help

The MAREMAP map interface is made up of three main components:

  • Map Window
  • Information Window
  • Legend Window
Together these allow you to interact with a variety of map layers obtain information of interest.

Map Window

The map window displays the currently selected data layers on a map of the United Kingdom. The data layers displayed may be dependent on the current scale of the map. At the top right hand corner of the map is an overview map which can be hidden or revealed by clicking on the small arrow in the top righthand corner of the map window.

Navigation

To 'pan' within the map, use your mouse to ‘click-drag’ the backdrop to your area of interest, or use the keyboard cursor keys.

To 'zoom' within the map, use the mouse scroll wheel (if present), the slider bar shown in the upper left of the map window, double-clock on the map (to zoom in sequentially).

Query the visible layers

Click on the map to return information on the layers shown at that location. A popup window will appear which can be cycled through using the back and forward arrows at the top right of the popup. To close the popup and clear the selection either click on the 'X' icon within the popup or click the 'Clear Selection' button within the map info window.

For the 'BGS Scanned Map Index' layer there is an added option within the popup to 'View Map'. Clicking on this will open a copy of the map - you can zoom in /out and pan across the image using the tools in the top right corner.
If using Internet Explorer 9 and the scanned maps fail to display, try enabling Compatibility View (broken page icon next to url path at the top of browser).
